Eric Simons was appointed Delhi Daredevils coach

Current India bowling Coach Eric Simmons was appointed as the head coach of Delhi Daredevils on Thursday for the fifth edition of the Indian Premier League 2012.

Announcing the elevation of Simons as the head coach of the Daredevils team, franchise owners GMR Sports said the move will help the side to regain its lost aura.

"I am sure that Simons' taking over as head coach and Sekar's return as mentor will help the team overcome the disappointments of last season and become most competitive again," GMR Sports' business chairman Kiran K Grandhi said in a statement.

The Virender Sehwag-led side finished at the bottom of the table in the last edition of the tournament earlier this year, managing to win just four matches out of the stipulated 14 games.

Sehwag, who is currently in Australia to play the four-match Test series against the hosts, said it will be exciting to work with Simons.

"Eric has done a good job as bowling coach and now he can do that as the head coach. He can make a difference as he has been with the team for a couple of years. If someone else had come, he would have to had to start from the scratch. It is good Eric has taken over and I am hoping he will do a good job," Sehwag said.

Umpires, administrators too fix matches: Lalit Modi

Former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi on Tuesday accused umpires and administrators of the game of being involved in match-fixing, shortly after a London court found banned Pakistan Test captain Salman Butt and pacer Mohammad Asif guilty in the spot-fixing scandal.

"It's not only players that fix matches - Sometimes there are Umpires too in connivance with Administrators. Again.. these reports are buried," Modi wrote in his twitter page.

A 12-member jury found Butt, 27, guilty of conspiracy to accept corrupt payments and conspiracy to cheat, while Asif, 28, was convicted of charge of conspiracy to cheat in one of the biggest scandals that rocked cricket last year.

"It is worst form of corruption. It makes everything else look Pale.

"People remotely assisting - match / Spot Fixing or People Preventing the information from coming out are equally to blame for this menace," Modi tweeted.

He advocated severe punishments for those found guilty in fixing matches.

"Persons involved in fixing should be completely banned from participating any kind of professional sport.

"Cricket authorities must have a zero tolerance for spot- fixing. Problem is that quantum of betting has jumped - with no checks and reporting."

The scandal goes back to August last year when the duo conspired with alleged bookie Mazhar Majeed and teen pace sensation Mohammad Aamer to deliver three no-balls during the Lord's Test.

While Aamer had reportedly pleaded guilty to the charge Butt and Asif pleaded not guilty.

Mumbai are the 2011 CLT20 champions!

With all the injuries and replacements at the start of the tournament, one wouldn't have given Mumbai Indians a chance of getting to the knockouts at the Champions League, let alone winning it today.

Mumbai are the 2011 CLT20 champions! On a slow wicket at the Chidambaram Stadium with just 139 runs to defend, Harbhajan Singh led Mumbai astutely. He took 3-20 and Royal Challengers Bangalore were crushed by 31 runs in a low-scorer.

Bangalore started the chase strongly with Tillakaratne Dilshan and Chris Gayle adding 38 in four overs. In the next 10, they made 39-5. Harbhajan and Chahal choked the runs dry on a wicket that seemed considerably slower than earlier.

Mumbai raised their fielding a notch, took the catches that mattered. By the end, Bangalore had fallen so far behind the required rate, it's hard to tell looking at the scoreboard that they were ever in the chase.

Harbhajan gambled by giving Lasith Malinga a third over in his first spell. Malinga delivered with his first ball. Dilshan swung across the line and missed. Gayle fell to a dubious LBW to Harbhajan when his front leg was a long way down the wicket. Mumbai had a foot in the door.

Mayank Agarwal and Virat Kohli, still feeling the effects of batting on the Chinnaswamy belter, didn't last long and were caught in the deep slogging slow turners. Arun Karthik and Mohammad Kaif fell the same way but they were under considerable pressure from the mounting run-rate.

Three run-outs dented Mumbai before they could steer the innings to substantiality. It wasn't sensational fielding but Mumbai's sloppiness. Opener Sarul Kanwar was ball-watching at the non-striker's end when he ignored Aiden Blizzard's call and got him out.

Suryakumar Yadav was promoted above Kieron Pollard and batted usefully for 24. Then he backed up too far and Vettori ran him out in his follow-through. The big wicket was James Franklin's (41) and some lazy running with Pollard cost him his wicket.

In the next over by Vettori, Mumbai fell apart. Pollard strange half-hearted loft couldn't clear mid-on. Harbhajan Singh was given not-out by Kumar Dharmasena to plumb LBW first ball. But he was given LBW to a faster delivery next ball which clearly seemed heading down the leg-side.
This loss extends Bangalore's poor run in T20 finals. They had lost IPL finals in 2009 and 2011.

We would like to finish first: Johan Botha

Warriors captain Johan Botha wants his side to make it to the semi-finals of the Champions League twenty20 by winning all their matches in the group stage.

"We would like to finish first. Our next game is against KKR. Three victories would take us into the knock-outs. From there, you are two away from winning the championship. It is not going to be easy but we are looking forward to the challenge," Botha said after his team forcefully beat the South Australia Redbacks.

Winning the first two matches in the main round has given them the requisite confidence.

"We knew it is going to be difficult for them if we took it to 170. Three wickets in first six overs was great," the Proteas offie said.

Redbacks' captain Michael Klinger admitted that they have played poor cricket.

"They played better than us. There are no excuses. We did not execute our basic skills well and lost wickets regularly. The run rate was high and they did well to contain us," Klinger said.

Klinger however dismissed theories of lack of practice being their undoing.

"We had practice back in Australia and five days in Kolkata and also here in the last few days. That can't be an excuse."

KKR beat Auckland by two runs in thriller

The Kolkata Knight Riders produced a disciplined bowling display to beat the Auckland Aces by two runs in a thrilling low-scoring Champions League Twenty20 qualifiers match on the opening day of the qualifying round at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

KKR won the toss Electing to bat, the Kolkata Knight Riders scored a modest 121 for six after they suffered a batting collapse, but their bowlers produced a superb show to restrict Auckland to 119 for six in a match that went down the wire after many twist and turns.

Auckland lost their first wicket off the first ball of their run chase, recovered at 60 for one, and then slumped to 61 for four in the 10th over. They were still in the hunt for an upset victory but with pressure piling and the required run-rate always climbing, they eventually fell short by two runs.

The last over of the match was guaranteed to produce high drama with Auckland needing 11 runs to win and Brett Lee taking the ball for Kolkata. In the event, Lee gave up just 8 runs in his over, in a superb display of controlled fast bowling, to put paid to the New Zealand side's hopes.

Manvinder Singh Bisla is the MoM for his fine knock of 45

Injured Gambhir to skip CL Twenty20 qualifiers

Kolkata Knight Rider’s captain, Gautam Gambhir will not take the field in the Champions League Twenty20 Qualifiers for the Shah Rukh Khan owned team as he has not fully recovered from his injury. South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis will lead the team in Gambhir's absence.

Gautam GambhirGambhir suffered a mild concussion while attempting to take a catch during the 4th Test match against England at The Oval. He missed out on the entire Twenty20 & ODI Series of the ongoing England tour.

The qualifiers will start on the 19th of September and get over on the 21st and will feature 6 teams.

Apart from KKR, Trinidad and Tobago, Ruhuna Rhinos, Auckland Aces, Leicestershire and Somerset will play in the qualifying phase with 3 teams going through to the main event.

Anderson may play IPL to earn T20 berth

After becoming the 2nd England bowler to scalp 200 wickets in both ODIs and Tests, pacer James Anderson said he might consider playing in the Indian Premier League to convince the selectors of his capabilities in the Twenty20 format.

Anderson was not part of the England squad that won the Twenty20 World Cup in 2010 and the 29-year-old pacer said he would look to perform well in the ongoing ODI series against India to earn a place in the T20 squad as well.

"My immediate priority is to play my part in winning the ODI series against India, but if I bowl well enough perhaps that will push me back into their thinking," Anderson was quoted as saying by the Daily mail.

"If not, one option might be to try to play in the Indian Premier League next spring or elsewhere, something I'm really going to have to consider."

"I'm sure the selectors know my feelings. I want to play T20 cricket for England, I'm disappointed that I'm not and it's down to me to persuade them I should be," he added.

Anderson on Saturday became only the second England bowler after Darren Gough (235) to take 200 wickets in both ODIs and Test cricket during the rain-marred first one-dayer against India at Chester-le-Street.

With the 2012 World Cup Twenty20 just a year and nine matches away for England, Anderson said he is running out of time to convince the selectors.

Dhoni given an honorary doctorate

Indian Cricket Captain MS Dhoni was awarded an honorary doctorate by De Montfort University after the conclusion of a Twenty20 cricket practice match against Leicestershire at Grace Road.

MS Dhoni was praised for his exemplary leadership quality and achievements at a ceremony here.

Dhoni has achieved many milestones as skipper of the Indian Team. His first major achievement was captaining the Indian team to victory in the Twenty20 World Cup 2007. He also captained the Indian side to victory the 2007-08 CB tri-series played in Australia. However, his crowning glory was helping India win the World Cup in 2011 after a gap of 28 years.

He holds the record for the most number of catches in an innings and the longest unbeaten run as a skipper. He also holds the award for the fastest century scored by an Indian wicket keeper. In 2008 and 2009, Dhoni was also named the ICC's ODI Cricket player of the year.

"I am amazed and honoured to receive this award. I see this award as an honour not only for me as the captain of the Indian cricket team but for the whole team to be proud of," Captain Dhoni said.

Dhoni is currently captaining the Indian team, which has been whitewashed 0-4 in the just-concluded Test series by England. Dhoni and his men will be hoping that they bounce back in the remainder of the tour. India play a T20 match against England on Wednesday followed by five ODIs.

Sri Lanka top Players to Skip SLPL Twenty20 2011

Sri Lanka's top players will skip largest part of the matches in the Sri Lanka premier league T20, dealing another blow to the struggling event, an official said Tuesday.

Captain Tilakaratne Dilshan, Ex-captain Kumar Sangakkara and veteran Mahela Jayawardene, all-rounder Angelo Mathews and Lasith Malinga are among local players expected to miss most of the 10-day tournament starting Thursday.

"The players will likely choose which matches they want to play, because they are being rested for the upcoming Australian tour," Sri Lanka Cricket media manager Brian Thomas told AFP.

The Australian team arrives in Colombo on July 30 to play three Test match Series, five one-day internationals and two Twenty20 games during their tour that ends on September 20.

Sri Lankan Premier league postponed to Aug 2012

The controversy ridden SLPL scheduled for August 2011 has been postponed to Aug, 2012. Sri Lanka will have a domestic T20 league this year but there will be no foreign players playing in it.

The decision follows the withdrawal of Indian players from the SLPL. The BCCI had denied its players permission to play in the league after it feared problems arising due to contract disputes. Speculations are also rife that former Indian T20 league (IPL) chairman, Lalit Modi, had a part in the SLPL but these suggestions have been strongly denied by SLC and Modi himself.

With no Indian players participating in the league there were no broadcasters for the league in India. Revenues from broadcast rights are usually a huge source of revenue and SLPL were hurt badly as they lost out on it.

The SLC committee that had created the tournament was disbanded by the country's sports ministry recently. The new SLC committee came to an agreement with the organizers, Somerset Entertainment ventures, to postpone the event to next year.

IPL-5 to begin on April 4

The 5th edition of Indian Premier League will be starting on April 4th, 2012 with the finals scheduled on May 27th. The tournament will be held after India return from their lengthy tour of Australia while South Africa complete their engagements in New Zealand.

IPL Team LogosThe tournament will consist of 74 matches, the same as this season and the complete match schedule will be announced soon.

The IPL has turned into a bone of contention with several countries ready to alter their schedule in accordance with the dates of the tournament. The Future Tour Programme (FTP) is one of the main discussion point during the 5-day ICC session currently being held in Hong Kong, amid calls from several countries to provide a window for IPL.

No Indian Cricketers in the SLPL: BCCI

The BCCI has refused to give permission to the Indian players to take part in the Sri Lankan Premier League as the event is being organized by a "private party" based in Singapore instead of the Sri Lankan Cricket Board.

Shashank Manohar"We took the decision at an informal meeting of 18-20 members that no Indian cricket player will be given permission to take part in the league as it is being organized by a private party based in Singapore. The Board's policy is not to allow cricketers to take part in private party-organized tournaments," BCCI president Shashank Manohar told PTI from Nagpur.

Manohar said unless the Board gives them a No Objection Certificate, Indian players cannot participate in the Lankan Twenty20 league.

"We have to give them permission and we have decided not to give it. We have already informed Sri Lanka Cricket board about it," he elaborated.

IPL a chance to learn: Pujara

Saurashtra's prolific middle-order batsman Cheteshwar Pujara feels that the Indian Premier League is a great platform for young cricketers to rub shoulders with the best in the business from across the world.

He said the IPL has its own charm and playing in the Twenty20 tournament is altogether a different experience.

Cheteshwar Pujara"IPL is the perfect platform for young cricketers to play alongside senior players of different countries. It (IPL) gives youngsters a chance to learn a lot from experienced players," Pujara told PTI.

Pujara's journey in the IPL so far has been far from rosy because of injuries.

The scenario was no different in this year's IPL IV as after playing just seven games for Royal Challengers Bangalore, he sustained a knee injury while fielding against Kochi Tuskers Kerala to not only miss the remainder of the tournament but also India's tour of West Indies.

"It is difficult to avoid on-field injury and an injured player does not have any option except for taking rest," Pujara said.

He, however, refused to disclose the nature of his injury.

"I cannot disclose the details of my injury as per BCCI's instruction."

Pujara also expressed disappointment for missing out on a chance to tour West Indies in the absence of senior players.

"Its painful to sit out."

In the absence of senior pros, Suresh Raina lead a depleted Indian side to a 3-2 win over the West Indies in the just-concluded five-match ODI series, and Pujara said it proves India's strong bench strength.

Afridi may be allowed to play in national Twenty20 event

The Pakistan Cricket Board will not stop suspended all-rounder Shahid Afridi from taking part in the national T20 championship, scheduled to be held in Faisalabad from June 24.

Shahid AfridiA well-placed source in the board said that as of now far it has been decided to allow Afridi to guide the Karachi Dolphins side in the tournament despite the ongoing disciplinary process against him.

"Since it is a domestic tournament and the matter between him and the board is now in court it is felt it is better he is allowed to captain the Karachi side in the event," a source said.

The Karachi City Cricket Association has also written to the board, seeking written clearance to allow Afridi to lead their team in the tournament.

Shane Warne fined US$50,000

The Indian cricket board has slapped a $50,000 fine on Australian bowler Shane Warne for his part in a bust-up with a local administrator after an IPL game, a statement said on Wednesday.

Warne, skipper of the Rajasthan Royals team in the Indian Premier League, was involved in an angry exchange with Sanjay Dixit, secretary of the Rajasthan state cricket association, following his team's defeat at home last week.

Shane WarneThe punishment casts a cloud over Warne's last game of professional cricket on Friday when his Rajasthan Royals team take on the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League. Warne was furious about his team being asked to play on a different wicket than one used in previous games, but he later apologised for "any distress" his action may have caused.

After a complaint by the Rajasthan cricket association, Warne and Dixit were summoned for a hearing before a disciplinary commission comprising IPL chairman Chirayu Amin and former player Ravi Shastri.

"The commission has decided to impose a fine of US$50,000 upon Mr Warne," the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which runs Indian cricket, said in a statement.

It said the disciplinary commission "regards the public criticism of Mr Dixit as being a serious breach by Mr Warne of his IPL playing contract".

"However, at the same time, the commission also recognises that Mr Warne has apologised to Mr Dixit, and that the incident occurred just after the match.

"In addition, the commission is cognisant of the contribution to the game of cricket in general, and to the Indian Premier League, which has been made by Mr Warne."

Twelve Indian Players in SL T20 league

As many as twelve Indian cricketers, including Munaf Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin, are expected to feature in the 1st edition of the Sri Lankan Premier League 2011.

According to a report in 'islandcricket.com', Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has secured the services of several famous overseas cricketers, including Chris Gayle and Kieron Pollard, who are currently engaged in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Apart from Gayle, whose blistering strokeplay has put the Royal Challengers Bangalore at the top of the points table in the fourth edition of the IPL, SLPL is also expected to feature Daniel Vettori, whose IPL journey was cut short after a recurring knee injury.

Among the Indian players on the SLPL radar, the inclusion of Patel and Ashwin besides Praveen Kumar, who was recently selected for the West Indies tour after missing the ICC World Cup due to an elbow injury, comes as a surprise as the trio is likely to be on national duty during that period.

India is scheduled to visit England during the month of July for a four-match Test series followed by a one-day tournament and a one-off Twenty20 match.

The other Indian players who figure in the list posted by the website include Dinesh Karthik, Irfan Pathan, Manish Pandey, Manoj Tiwary, Paul Valthaty, Ravindra Jadeja, Saurabh Tiwary, Umesh Yadav and Vinay Kumar.

Ganguly will play IPL4 for Pune Warriors

Former Kolkata Knight Riders captain Sourav Ganguly has been signed up by Pune Warriors India for the remaining part of the IPL Season 4. The iconic player, who was earlier ignored by all the franchises in the auctions earlier this year, will be replacing injured bowler Ashish Nehra.

He will join the squad tonight and will play under the captainship of Yuvraj Singh.

Sourav Ganguly"We were waiting for Ashish Nehra's fitness report and ultimately the report came yesterday. I was already in talks with Ganguly and we decided that the amount of experience that Sourav has in cricket will no doubt help the team. So we finalised Ganguly last night," Pune Warriors Team Director Abhijit Sarkar said referring to the finger injury that Nehra has been nursing.

The 38-year-old had earlier refused a mentor's role with KKR and there had been speculation of a possible comeback through another franchise.

The left-handed batman was first sought by Kochi Tuskers Kerala but their application was rejected by the IPL's Governing Council.

However, he signed on the dotted line for Pune yesterday, giving a major fillip to the side which has lost six matches on the trot after starting promisingly with a couple of back-to-back wins.

KKR's loss is advantage for RCB: Zaheer khan

RCB Fast bowler Zaheer Khan on Thursday said KKR's loss in their last match would be an "advantage" for his team when two sides clash in an IPL match here on Friday.

After winning against Kochi Tuskers Kerala(KTK), the Bangalore outfit suffered 3 consecutive losses and lies 9th in the IPL standings.

Zaheer Khan"I feel the table is open. You have seen big teams losing to teams that we have never thought of. KKR lost their last game which is going to be an advantage for us. If we beat them tomorrow it will be really good for us to go forward," Zaheer said.

"We all know that few games have not gone our way. But we are confident, we have worked hard in the nets. Once you get the momentum, it's about capitalising on that."

"It's just few fine tuning that's needed as far as game our game is concerned. We need some wins under our belt. Gayle's inclusion will definitely add positivity to the environment."

Zaheer said Bangalore have worked hard on their fielding and the players were looking to get into the winning mode.

"In the last few practice sessions, we have done good work. Everyone is up for it. Everyone in the side wants to get into the winning run as soon as possible. That's a good sign."

Asked about the hectic schedule after the World Cup 2011, Zaheer said: "IPL is about 20 overs. It's not hard to keep intensity up for 20 overs.

"With our World Cup success, we are all excited and it feels something special. We are now back and doing what we do best."

Zaheer said he was looking forward to giving his side a couple of early wickets.

Tendulkar was fined $20,000 for slow over rate

As if the loss to IPL debutants Kochi Tuskers Kerala was not enough, Mumbai Indians captain Sachin Tendulkar was fined $20,000 for maintaining a slow over-rate during their IPL match in Mumbai.

Sachin Tendulkar"The IPL today advised that the Mumbai Indians have been fined for maintaining a slow over rate during last night's IPL match against Kochi Tuskers Kerala in Mumbai," said a statement which did not specify the amount that the team has been docked.

"At the end of the match, Mumbai Indians were assessed to be one over behind the required rate after allowances were taken into consideration.

"Since it was Mumbai Indians first fence of the season, under the IPL's Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, the Skipper, Sachin Tendulkar, was fined $20,000," it added.

Mumbai went down by eight wickets against Kochi despite Tendulkar's maiden Twenty20 century last night.

Vettori to lead Rayal Challengers Bangalore

Daniel Vettori has been appointed the skipper of the Royal Challengers Bangalore for IPL 2011.

Vettori has been amongst the most respected players in world cricket and has led New Zealand to the semi-finals of the 2011 World Cup. Vettori is in the same mould as the man he replaces - Anil Kumble. Both were very respected as captains and amongst the leading spinners in the game and both are immensely dignified gentlemen.

Daniel VettoriKumble had led the Royal Challengers to a second place finish in 2009 and a third place finish last year. He has now moved into the position of the Chief Mentor of the team.

RCB Chairman Dr Vijay Mallya said, "We are very excited for the upcoming season. Vettori is a highly experienced and respected leader and we hope to ride to the pinnacle of success this IPL under his leadership."

Director of Royal Challengers Sports Pvt. Ltd, Sidhartha Mallya said, "It is wonderful that we have somebody of his stature to lead our team this year. He is the ideal person to fill Anil's shoes and I wish him the very best in this endeavour. I look forward to supporting him in his efforts towards a successful season."

Kumble himself also lauded Vettori, saying: "Vettori is a hugely respected professional not only within his team but amongst his international peers as well. His unique ability to get players to perform as a unit and deliver more than just the sum of their parts, as he has done time and again with New Zealand, will be a big asset to any team."
